“It’s a cumbersome procedure, it’s going on and on,” he said. “Pepco’s got a lot of lawyers. It seems their lawyers are better than their linemen, and it’s going to take a long time to get to any improvement.”

I was lucky, however, to bear witness to this visual conflagration of their incompetence:

Its a video one of my neighbors took of the substation fire and collapse from earlier this week. It was very eerie, but it was beautiful, too.

It took Pepco two days to turn the power back on, and from what I’ve read, some people are still without power. For shame!

January 24 - 30, 2011

In fact, Bethesda’s Restaurant Week is right around the corner! Its time to eat, folks.

I’ve started going out to eat from time to time, and I just wrote a review of Siu’s Asian Bistro and The Silver Diner.

As for restaurant week, Mon Ami Gabi looks to be the place I’d like to go. I have a weak spot for Steak Frites!

Today I visited the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration center in White Oak. It was unbearably slow. And I thought the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles was bad!

Ugh. I spent two hours there. It was actually a nice building with nice systems, but I could not believe how many people were there. It was nuts.

In all seriousness, the system they have in place is quite nice. It includes:

Live wait times and queue lengths for each type of service

A pre-ticketing system which ensures you don’t wait an hour (or in my case, more than two) only to be disappointed

A video screen showing which tickets should go to which counter

I also have to say that it seems to me that the quality of life the employees have there must be better than their equivalents in Massachusetts. The employees of the MVA seemed much less cranky and irritable in Maryland.

And on that note, just out of curiosity I asked the employee I was working with if it was possible to have a license in more than one state. He said that while it used to be allowed, it is no longer possible, and that all US states share a common database for licensing. Very interesting, huh!?!?

Thankfully, I had all my paperwork in order and I was able to transact my business there successfully.

I recently obtained a PO Box at the very cool United States Post Office in Garrett Park, Maryland. Thankfully, its within walking distance from my apartment in Parkside in Bethesda, Maryland.

When I walked to the post office, I tooka picture of this awesome tree I've never noticed before:

My Motorola Droid X has not been able to find a signal for about two hours now. I'm in my apartment which always has two or three bars. I've rebooted my phone to no avail. My guess is that there is some type of Verizon Wireless outage in Montgomery Country.

I seriously had no idea that Montgomery County was such a total disaster area. In the measly two years I've lived here, I've witnessed:

Numerous water main breaks

An earthquake

Two blizzards within days of each other, aka "snowmaggedon", resulting in four days without power, heat, or hot water

Tornado-type winds with thunderstorms that knocked out power to a half-million homes for several days, I lost my power for four days

I've also read in the news about rampant orgies and sex parties, and more recently about a Montgomery family that held a housekeeper captive for forced labor.

This place is crazy!! What's next? Locusts?

In my opinion, the service provided by PEPCO is ludicrous and laughably bad. Thankfully I still have power, but there were numerous traffic lights throughout Bethesda today.

Why was the power out in Bethesda AGAIN?

Who knows. Not the weather I'd guess. There was a little rain today, and no noticeable wind.

The Washington Times posted this quote from Governor O'Malley:

"This situation is totally unacceptable," Mr. O'Malley wrote. "Power stays on more consistently in many developing nations than it does now in the communities surrounding our nation's capital."

Nice, but I don't think he goes far enough.

There is a new playground in Bethesda on River Road near Cedar Avenue.

If you haven't been there yet, you may want to check it out - its quite nice!

My two year old daughter really likes it - the swings are great, the turf is great, and the climbing is great.
