Lake Whetstone isn’t in Bethesda, but its close enough for this blog. Its in Gaithersburg, which is about 20 minutes outside of Bethesda. I’ve been going there as there is a park where you can walk.
Its quite nice, some geese and fellow walkers - even a little bridge. It also has this strange thing in the middle:

It is the drain. I think it is like that to keep branches and leaves from clogging it up. It technically isn't in Gaithersburg, it's in Montgomery Village.
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm from the Boston area and the reservoirs I've seen there have dams, which have plenty of problems. When dams break, the overflow can wreak havoc.
Doesn't look like this drain can "break" - if it clogs, then the lake level rises. Chances are it would be at a slow enough rate that the blockage could be removed or the lake drained with a portable pump.
